A practical overview of Red Hat for Linux newbies.

This book is both a solid introduction to Red Hat Linux 9 and a concise introduction to more advanced system administration and networking subjects. It is well written and full of useful instructional examples. The format is simple and to-the-point, with enough context to explain but not overwhelm. Though printed in 2003, much of the information is still very useful. One of the reviewers points out that the book misses one of the more common setup schemes, being a Windows OS (ex. XP) as a host with a Red Hat installation on top. To avoid the hazards newbies face with dual booting setups, download VMware Player followed by the Red Hat 9 CDs included with the book. Users could also go for the Fedora 5 virtual machine download (or any other distro you like) distributed also through VMware's site. Users can then run Linux from within their Windows OS host operating system just like any other Windows application.

Excellent for beginner's and intermediate level

I am an intermediate Linux Admin and I have to admit I like this book. It is targeted for beginner's but I have learned many things that I missed from from other books. Because of its very gentle reading style and clear examples I filled a lot of holes in my foundation. (No pointy head, propeller hat cryptic reference stuff) Good chapter examples explaining permissions, groups, setuid, samba, nfs. There was a chapter on navigating thru all the GUI apps and what they do -- just enough good data without overdoing it. After reading this beginner book, I think I can now say with confidence.. I am a better intermediate Linux user. Great work!

Good for beginner

Got this book when I needed to ramp on Red Hat Linux fast. Good beginner book. In the best traditions of Wrox "Beginning... " series, well written, assumes no prior Linux knowledge, worth every penny. Not a programming book, but an excellent title for administrator who wishes to get comfortable with Linux basics. Awsome coverage on RHT,basic terminal, light on setup, setup problems.

Good for beginners
