Best book on the subject

This is not a reference book in a detailed sense but is an excellent tutorial on understanding this material. The style of writing is very good for me. I can tell that Grimes is an experienced teacher. It is written in an informal explanatory style where the author just tries to tell you what you need to know. I guess this can be confusing at times to some people but I get very confused whan an author tries to focus on one topic, leaving out asides and references. I NEED those surrounding ideas to understand the central topic and it's ramifications. I cannot get the big ideas without lots of tertiary asides and explanations to connect the ideas together. Also the sequencing is very good; Not at all chaotic or jumbled but well ordered for learning various aspects of the subject.

An outstanding book!

This is an excellent book! Unlike other COM books where all they teach you is how to use the Wizard, this one makes you write a COM server from scratch, without the help of any wizards or relying on visual c++ to register the component for you. Then the author starts talking about wizards and how it and ATL helps you write components faster.The writing is clear and concise. No BS'ing with the history of COM and how it will change your future 10 years from now. I would recommend buying Wrox's COM IDL & Interface design to go along with this book, as it will clearly explain the syntax of IDL and why they look that way. Beginners may also want to read Dale Rogerson's Inside COM (Microsoft Press) before starting on this book, or you might have questions that go unanswered.

Very good basis for learning ATL

A really good, clear introduction to ATL (though not adequate as a primer in COM). For someone who already understands some of the basics of COM and feels a need to work through some clear examples to get a real feel for ATL, this book is excellent. 'ATL Internals' is good and much more detailed - but I found that as a beginner, the details can tend to obscure the overall picture. This book left me feeling confident and enthusiastic about ATL.

Great Introduction to COM and ATL

By far the best introduction book on COM and ATL. Great style of writing in the first couple of chapters, with detailed information about COM & ATL suitable for experianced C/C++ developers with little or no COM/ATL experiance.

Much improved over 1st ed

This is much improved from the first edition, with all of the example code written for VC6/ATL3. The authors cover most of the features of ATL in a clear way and is a great way to start learning about ATL. The title is a bit misleading, it is not a 'beginners' book because they get down to the mechanics of ATL straight away.
