The Methodist tradition gave you something specific: a way to organize the spiritual life. The class meetings. The spiritual disciplines. The conference accountability. The
connectional system that said you could not be a Christian alone. Wesley
understood that grace needed forms to move through. He was right about that.
And the method he designed produced specific wounds. The perfection that stayed out of reach. The disciplines that became performance metrics. The fracture that broke the
denomination organized around connection. The prevenient grace whose most
generous doctrine the institution didn't always embody.
Before the Method names all of it. Then it asks what the method was always pointing toward - and shows that what it was pointing toward was always already there, before the first class meeting assembled to reach for it. The prior grace was more prior than
prevenient. The condition was always already the case.
