The American dream only begins when you wake up.
In June 1998, two friends leave a small Czech town for America. They have plans, a few contacts, and a promise of thirty-six thousand dollars a year. What waits for them is night work behind locked supermarket doors, unpaid wages, and a country they do not yet know how to navigate.
As their paths begin to separate, the narrator moves between cleaning shifts, a pizzeria, a shop and a hotel. Learning English is only part of learning how to manage. Trust, pride and the need to earn a living pull him towards choices he will have to answer for long after the journey ends.
Spanning fourteen months in late-1990s America, Before Dawn over a Strange City is an autobiographical novel about friendship, work, belonging and taking responsibility. Told from the distance of returning home, it follows the small decisions that can change the course of a life.
