This book is a prequel and takes place eight years before Blade, Buckler, Bastion/Blade, Buckler, Bastion: The Illuminated Edition. It is not essential to read this book first since the events contained are referenced in part, and without spoilers in the next book. Regardless, this is the first in the book series entitled Blade, Buckler, Bastion.

The following is a work of fiction inspired by the historical period known as the Viking Age. Life was hard. People fought to survive the untamed, natural world. Cultures clashed. Lives were lost. Cruelties were justified in the brutality of war. The faith and reason of the people were tested beyond what they could have possibly imagined.
This was the time where everything was filled with uncertainty.
