Apiculture refers to the maintenance, care, and administration of honeybee colonies. Bees are maintained either for the honey and other items they produce, for the pollination services they provide to blossoming fruit and vegetable crops, or just as a pastime. It is a common practice: honeybees are maintained in major cities as well as towns, on farms and rangelands, in woods and deserts, and all the way from the arctic to the antarctic to the equator. The honeybee is not a domesticated species. Those who reside in a man-made dwelling known as a beehive or hive are not distinguishable from those who reside in a colony that is situated in a tree.
