Bede and the Black Madonna - A Promise Fulfilled is my memoir of a remarkable English Benedictine monk and priest from Prinknash Abbey in Gloucestershire, called to India in 1955. India transformed Father Bede and he would remain living there for the rest of his life. He settled in Shantivanam in a small ashram on the banks of the River Kauveri originally founded by two French religious, Père Jules Monchanin and Père Henri le Saux, (Swami Abhishiktananda), in Tamil Nadu, South India. Over the years Father Bede became a guiding light to tens of thousands of seekers from all over the world. In 1990 Father Bede Griffiths had a stroke which left him unconscious and blue to the waist for a week. He was clinically dead. But - he returned from that Darkness a man of Light, and was to tell everyone: "I have been on a Journey you know, I have been on a Journey with the Black Madonna ... and I was overwhelmed by Love." He radiated that love, it shone through him even when scowling at some minor irritation! Father Bede had experienced a force so cosmic it transfigured his final years and transformed his theology. His experience powered him for the last two years of his life and for those years, from the age of 84 to 86, Father Bede undertook world travel like never before. In 1992 he was my blessed guest for four days during his final Australian, and world, lecture tour. It was over breakfast, after a holy moment with a rose bush, that he set me the task to: continue my journey with the Black Madonna. Such a mighty ask would demand the next thirty years of my life. I invite you with me on that journey.
