In adulthood, a lot of us find ourselves in a slump from repetitive negative thoughts due to hardships in our past experiences. We tend to relive and replay them in our day-to-day lives, letting occurrences from our past affect our present, as well as our future. Becoming Whole, describes a woman who was doing just that. The protagonist, Ann Dobbin, was a young girl with a troubled youth who let those troubles affect her well into her adulthood, until she became tired of being a victim and decided to take control of her own life. Ann realized that although she could not dictate what others do, she could create the life she wanted through her own beliefs and resourcefulness. Ann tells how her past affected her perspective on life and was defeated by them for much of her life. She then, tells us how she gained independence and changed her thinking to become the woman she is today. The intent of Becoming Whole is to show readers that even the average Jane can overcome her past and have the life of her dreams. Being demeaned constantly as a child, being told she was insignificant by her mother, becoming a mother at the age of 15, and enduring a bad marriage were the least of Ann's worries. The hardest of her troubles were yet to come. Ann's only son lost his battle to a chronic illness at the age of 17, after only 15 months from his diagnosis date. Three years after burying her son, her youngest daughter was diagnosed with the same chronic illness. All of these events were enough to cripple Ann's belief in herself and the love of her Creator. For much of her life Ann believed she was worthless, but she became liberated by reading self-help books in her adulthood, which helped to restore a powerful connection with God and gave her the realization that she can become whatever she chooses to be. Ann learns that the power to transform her life has always been hers, thus a transformation does occur as she changes her beliefs about who she is and finds true happiness.
