Brigitte Riley is a college student in Newport, Rhode Island, during the oncoming war, WWII. She meets a sailor in training and falls in love. When he ships out, she makes good on her promise to visit his mother in Montana. From the bright days of spring in Newport, she travels across the country, just after D-Day, and the trains are filled with military widows and mourning mothers of soldiers. When she finally gets to Medicine Lake, Montana, she is surprised at the life in the small town there.
