Becoming Liz
In 1988 St. Louis, Elizabeth Rutland appears to have built the perfect life. At thirty-three, she is a rising marketing executive known for her discipline, composure, and ability to stay in control. She follows lists, routines, and expectations with precision because control has always made her feel safe.
But when a humiliating public breakup shatters the carefully managed image she has spent years constructing, the life Elizabeth built begins to crack open. Nightmares return. Buried memories surface in fragments she cannot fully explain. The closer she gets to the truth, the harder it becomes to separate who she really is from the woman survival taught her to become.
As Elizabeth struggles to rebuild, she is pulled back toward the complicated rhythms of family, Black community, friendship, and love. Bradley offers comfort and attention, but Steven sees past performance and polish to the woman underneath. Around them, sisters argue, old wounds reopen, and long-held silences begin to unravel.
Set against the cultural texture of late-1980s St. Louis, Becoming Liz is an emotionally layered women's fiction novel about identity, buried trauma, memory, reinvention, and the quiet courage required to live authentically. It is a story about the cost of survival, the weight of expectation placed on Black women, and what happens when a woman can no longer outrun herself.
Perfect for readers who enjoy intimate, character-driven fiction centered on family, emotional healing, and complex relationships.
