Johann Joachim Becher (1635-1682) was a German physician and alchemist. His best known work is perhaps his Physica Subterranea, though he created about thirty books, primarily on alchemy, metals and minerals.
In the first part of this book he demonstrates his design for a portable furnace, which was capable of being modified to create the specific levels of heat needed for the many different alchemical processes.
The second part deals with the various substances, apparatus and processes required for the pursuit of alchemy.
