The landscapes of Guilin were often depicted in Chinese brush paintings, one of which is celebrated on the back of China's twenty yuan bill (the most common currency.)Guilin is a nodal point, situated on the Li River in the crossroads where northern and southern cultures come together. It has a famous natural environment. Karst formations (mountains or boulders really) surround the city and this environment is protected, making the air and water much cleaner than other parts of China. The State Council of China designated Guilin a National Famous Historical and Cultural City. Many students in China learn about Guilin in school. The locals have an expression too, "by water, by mountains, most lovely, Guilin." The city got its name in the Qin dynasty about 221-206 BC.Exploring Guilin and the surrounding areas provides a photographer with many varied subjects. In Guilin, you can find breathtaking landscapes, yes, but the city makes an excellent environment for portraits thanks to the friendly locals, spiritual images thanks to the Buddhist temples, and night images thanks to the wonderful nighttime outdoor markets and illuminated street life.This is a visual exploration of Guilin as seen through the eyes of fine art photographer Carol Schiraldi.
