Genius? Mad? Pat!!

Hmmm. Pat Ingoldsby eh? I wasn't sure if I should bother at first. This is after all a man who ran the Dublin poetry scene with military-esque efficiency in the late 90's. A man so tortured with inner pain and anger that most of his books read like the ramblings of a stoned duck. A man who's literary CV has all the ammunition of a down-and-out, desperate for another swig from his empty bottle of Thunderbird. I found however, that this was far from the truth. How alarmed I was then, when I couldn't put this book down after only the tenth page. Ingoldsby's "Beautiful Cracked Eyes" is as brilliantly poetic as it is touching and heart warming. At worst, it contains the wit and humour of Oscar Wilde, or even Vladimir Nabokov at his most risqué. At his best however, Pat Ingoldsby imitates, and in some cases even betters, the literary vision of the famous beat poets such as James Baldwin or Lawson Hancock. When in mood creating gear, which he can turn on and off like a tap, Ingoldsby charms the reader with his unique use of diction and prose. At times it seems, when the author is in full descriptive and scene setting flow, the spirit of the great Kerouac or even the unpredictable Hans Christian Anderson seems ever-present in this wonderful authors weaving and restless mind. It's a must read for anyone. Not as consistently sublime as some of his other work, but nonetheless, arresting. Top notch.
