A tropical island paradise, a tourist's dream. White sand, blue sea, palm trees, music, rum and fun. Or is it a murky, murderously corrupt gangland?

The new republic of Amelia in the southern Caribbean has just been born, but it already has problems. On the face of it everything is just fine, but underneath there are threats and pressures, as well as a rapidly climbing murder rate. The new Prime Minister, Saul Rickard, seeks help from the former colonial power - Britain - to enable him to determine exactly where the pressures and threats are coming from, and who is responsible.

Help comes in the form of two mismatched misfits, Inspector Jimmy Blaydon and MI6 analyst Saffron Talbot. They are working almost alone and in secret, living in the same house and hating every minute of it. But they are thrown together, isolated, a long way from home and facing an impossible task.
