Be the One You Need: 21 Life Lessons I Learned While Taking Care of Everyone But Me

By Sophia a Nelson

Sophia A. Nelson is an acclaimed journalist, bestselling author, national on-air political commentator, and attorney. Yet, like most of us, even she has had seasons of self-doubt--pain from the past caused by circumstances beyond her control. As she came to learn, it was when she stopped feeling guilty and neglecting herself emotionally and started understanding the importance of self-care and nurturance that she found the freedom to truly live and thrive. Her message, Be the One You Need, reveals the 25 lessons that will illuminate for readers that the answers they seek are always within us.

There are five key principles, a framework to make us whole, as Nelson shows us. The first is that all roads to peace, success, and good relationships start with self-value: you are who you need, and you are not your history or your family. Next, although we are emotional beings, we need to manage our emotions before they manage us in order to use them as powerful tools for success. Nourishing and replenishing your spiritual self daily is key to peace and stability. We must understand relationships--both with ourselves and others--and understand that they are reciprocal, not transactional. Finally, successful people are intentional: they live a life that integrates common sense with respect for others, with grace and collaboration.
