As vocationally called ministers who log many hours per week passing on God's Truth to others, one of our most common pitfalls is forgetting how pleasurable (Psalm 16:11) the presence of God is for us. The good calling of being busy caring about others' spiritual well-being can unfortunately often create a lack of personal affection for the sweetness of God we teach others about. If our lives and ministries are to be full of both personal joy and Spirit-infused power, it is essential that we emphasize living and ministering NEAR to God. At the end of Psalm 73 (v.28), we find these words: "But for me, it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all your works." This Psalm does not begin with positive feelings toward God; it is actually the opposite. The first 16 verses of the Psalm show us a confused, bitter, envious man of God who was not near God or making Him his refuge. Instead, he resorted to comparison with the world/non-believers and self-pity about how hard his life and calling were. The change in perspective and attitude comes in verse 17 of Psalm 73. He enters the SANCTUARY OF GOD and begins to grasp the truth and perspective about how much better God is than all other things and how much better his life is simply because he has God.
