Be Happy: Excerpts from The Teachings of Sung Zui

AD 1212 - Between the mountains of the North-East of India and China lived the Master Sung Zui. He used to wander everywhere to find a disciple; rarely the enlightened masters did this at the time. He had been wandering, walking on his bare feet to seek the right disciple. He had walked thousands of miles and places in search of the disciple. But the many who came to learn from him had run off in the night because the Master Sung used to say: "Just sit beside me and listen" with a stick in his hand. If he found his disciple wanted to run away or was trying to meditate, he would beat him with his stick saying: "Can't you wait for the one you have been seeking for centuries?"

After thirty years of walking, Sung disappeared suddenly; he was ninety years old at the time. As each realized being is unique, he was unique in his way, but less loved by the people. Whenever he used to go into villages, people would change their ways. Out of all the masters, he was invited the least. Because he never answered the question and never allowed his disciple to meditate, or behave in their own way.

He used to say: "Never listen to me because it agrees with your intellect; know that death takes away your intellect too."
