In the 1880's, with the Civil War long over but many of the participants still alive and well, The Century Magazine solicited a collection of personal accounts, which were subsequently published as "Battles and Leaders of the Civil War." The four volume set has been periodically reprinted, but includes the original maps, drawings, portraits, and illustrations. "The Tide Turns" is the third volume in the set, opening with the Perryville Campaign of 1862 and covering Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, and concluding with the Chattanooga Campaign in late 1863. The accounts capture, sometimes in heart-breaking detail, the slow turning of the tide of the war, as Union resources and increasingly proficient generals wore down the Confederacy. The writers were almost all former officers in the Union or Confederate Armies. Their respective points of view on each battle or campaign vary hughly. Former generals discuss campaign strategy while field grade and company grade officers discuss, in some cases, very specific actions in a particular battle. The result is a sometimes intimate if uneven oral history of the Civil War. "The Tide Turns" should be taken with a grain of salt. The accounts reflect often imperfect memory rather than finished historical analysis. Not a few of these accounts may be guilty of a little post-war score-settling. With that caution taken, this volume and series are very highly recommended as a valuable resource to fans and students of the Civil War.
