Battlefield Monument: The Ambush at Yanmen Pass/战地丰碑：伏击雁门关 [Chinese]

In October 1937, the 716th Regiment of the 358th Brigade, 120th Division of the Eighth-Route Army carried out two successful ambushes against Japanese military truck convoys at Heishitougou south of Yanmenguan in Dai County, Shanxi Province, to assist the Kuomintang troops in the defensive Battle of Xinkou. The two ambushes left over 500 Japanese troops dead or wounded and destroyed more than 30 motor-vehicles. The Eighth-Route Army temporarily cut off the supply route between Fanshi and Xinkou, rendering powerful support to the frontal-line troops at Xinkou. As another major victory of the Eighth-Route Army following the Pingxingguan Victory, the Yanmenguan Ambush Battle ranks among the three initial triumphs in the early stage of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. In his work Problems of Strategy in Guerrilla War against Japan, Mao Zedong spoke highly of the campaign-level coordinating function of guerrilla operations around Yanmenguan. After the Battle of Xinkou, Wei Lihuang once remarked to Zhou Enlai, "The Eighth-Route Army has severed several enemy rear-supply lines and given tremendous help to our front-line troops at Xinkou."
