During the summer of 2014, twenty-year-old Mathias Kamau-Barrett decides to take a hiatus from college so that he can spend time on Battersea Island. He is hopeful that he can get involved with the residents and help them in their huge tax assessment problem that threatens them off the homeland that has been in their families? possession for generations. The college student takes off for the Georgia coast. Upon his arrival to the remote location, he discovers the beauty of the island and the warmth of people as well as a special gift that he possesses within him, the sense, a paranormal ability to read people and situations with high accuracy upon first contact or, at times, with no interaction at all. He quickly becomes acquainted with the inhabitants by striking a friendship with Harper Shaye, lead advocate in the fight against the county, and becomes immersed in the situation. Through Harper, he is introduced to F'rn'z ?sman, a paralegal working to help the families get over the hurdle of the county's zoning issues and a property tax increase. She calls up Mathias's educational prowess to assist her with legal research. Mathias's research is not only met with opposition but a mysterious set of circumstances'including a death'occurring on the island. The sense guides Mathias to believe that there are ulterior motives behind the county and the state to remove the indigenous population from their land. Whether or not Mathias can provide assistance and the residents win their legal battle are the set of circumstances they must persevere.
