A fast-paced book that hits the mark for mid-teens.

Picking up where the film BATMAN & ROBIN left off, this novella focuses on Batgirl, and her committment to the hero's vocation. Although Batgirl survived her baptism of fire against Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy, there are still lingering questions as to whether Batman and Robin really need her. When Gotham City is menaced by Black Mask and the False Face Society (a criminal group frequently used by author Doug Monech in the BATMAN comic book), Batgirl gets the chance to prove her worthiness to her teammates...and most importantly, to herself. Monech aims the story to appeal to younger people, and succeeds very well, avoiding the overly-lyrical dialogue that typically graces his stories. TO DARE THE DARKNESS is a fine book for younger people and a worthy addition in the BATMAN canon...or is that the BATGIRL canon? Either way, it's worth a look-see.
