His wife Julie, became a victim of a kidnapping plot orchestrated by Alicia Silverthorne, she headed a terrorist group that had hidden intentions of extracting information and a fair portion of Bastiens financial fortune invested in his company. He had the ability to do so with the type of lifestyle he lived and the power he had as the top man for Eddsco-a multi-billion-dollar company whose acquisition merger with two other companies would reveal his stepbrothers secret agenda.During the turmoil of being a rat in a lab, Bastien waited for instruction through a cell phone and messages given to him by the criminals that held his wife, he tried to constructively think of ways to solve the situation that he was in. Bastien was not used to being the person on the receiving end as he was the one who always had control of the events in his life. Instead of going to his old friend with links to the FBI he conducted his own personal investigation using his contacts and other resources in failing attempts. Vanis had links to the kidnappers and being directly involved with unraveling the plot to find hidden information that would link her to a large fortune goes beyond her duty of being both a conduit and a lifesaver for Bastien. She has her own agenda that later in the book is revealed to be the answer to Bastiens problems and the downfall of her partner in crime, Alicia. Its a race between time for Vanis as she could only trust herself to determine if the subject that she was assigned to had the information needed to unlock millions in Eddsco stocks.
