The River Girl has been taken. The last of her kind, this beautiful water nymph protected and nourished the river and the ancient, enchanted forest through which it flowed with her magical powers. But of late, men came to the river. These foul servants of the evil Archduke kidnapped the River Girl, taking her to a city of men far from the forest. In her absence, the river began to grow foul and putrid, and the forest began to die. Enter Barrow Ben, an unlikely hero in the form of a stoic brown bear. He is chosen in a last-ditch effort to find the River Girl and bring her back to the forest. But the outside world is no place for a bear, so Ben assumes the shape of a large and powerful man so that he might accomplish his task. Yet the world of men proves a beguiling place for Ben, a world filled with grim soldiers, traitorous thieves and danger at every turn.
