Barrow: A Novel of Extreme Folk Horror

Some forests keep secrets. Blackwood keeps accounts.

From the opening pages of BARROW:

Something heavy moved in the trees to the left, and Elspeth's hand tightened around Darren's sleeve as a shape separated from shadow: low to the ground, immense, shoulders rolling with slow and deliberate weight.

The boar was the size of a bull calf, tusks curved forward like pale scythes, steam venting from its snout in steady bursts.

Its eyes reflected nothing. They swallowed the light.

"Oh my God," she breathed.

Darren turned - and saw the man behind it.

Twenty years ago, eight-year-old Liam Rookshade disappeared beyond the iron boundary of Blackwood Forest. No body. No answers. Eventually, even the search stopped.

His sister never did.

Maribel Rookshade has spent fifteen years learning to read what others miss: broken branches, compressed earth, the smallest disturbance left behind by something that does not want to be found. Now, accompanied by a documentary crew and carrying two decades of unanswered grief, she is finally crossing the boundary that swallowed her brother.

Blackwood is not ordinary wilderness. It is a system.

For generations, a steward has maintained an ancient Covenant bound to the forest. At every equinox, an offering must be made. The paths are controlled. The records are kept. And enormous boars - bred, trained, and conditioned to hunt human prey - enforce rules older than anyone still living.

But twenty years ago, someone broke those rules.

Liam was never lawful quarry.

Now the equinox is approaching, the old violation remains open, and Maribel may be the only person Blackwood will allow to challenge the account. To reach the truth, she must survive a forest that changes the ground beneath her, a hunter who knows every path, and animals that no longer behave like animals at all.

Inside BARROW:

A grief-driven tracker hunting the truth behind her brother's disappearanceAn isolated wilderness where ancient ritual has become a system of controlMassive trained boars used as instruments of the huntRelentless predator-and-prey survival horrorExtreme folk horror built on blood, grief, ritual, and accountability

The killings were never random. The forest has been keeping score. And this time, the debt has a name.

"The forest does not take. It reclaims."

Cross the boundary. The account is waiting.
