This is a great book- an absolute must have for every dog enthusiast. One of the really great things Reees does in this book is to educate us about our dogs' inborn drives and instincts, how mother dogs teach their young, and how dogs as pack members interact with each other. We learn how to use this knowledge of their drives and instinctual behavior, to really bond with them and to train them effectively. And when it comes to training, Reeves really makes crystal clear just what is meant by "correct timing." In some aspects of training this used to be a bit fuzzy for me. Not any more. By understanding how our dogs learn and why they behave as they do, our training becomes so much more effective and fun. Whether you just want your dog to be a social, responsible pet, or to compete in advanced Schutzhund, this is a book you should have.
This book will touch your heart!

This book is terrific! I laughed outloud and I cried. The author knows her people as well as her dogs and she uses her sharp wit to tell us about both. Some parts are hilarious; other parts remind us that very often it's not the dog, it's the owner but behavior problems (of either) can be worked out with proper training. And Vera Reeves reminds us all about how special those friends we call dogs really are.
Informative and Entaining

This book is must reading for anyone who loves dogs. Although not a "how to" dog training book, it offers numerous training tips based on years of experience and, most of all, dog wisdom. It is extremely entertaining and subtly informative for those who get the message. Vera Reeves obviously trains motivationally and with love. Her approach to all dogs, and her success with their human handlers, is a credit to her as a trainer and as a person.
Dogs Rule!

This book is a true gem! Not only does Vera capture the real essence of our "best friends", she lets us know in no uncertain terms that we are often the ones who need to be re-trained, not the dogs. She doesn't pull any punches, but tells it like it is, and still tells us how to make the training corrections we need to in order to have dogs that are well behaved and who still enjoy being dogs. The stories are a hoot, and good studies of dog owners (Remember that people accuse Dear Abby of making up tales - - these are real people, real dogs, and real situations so enjoy looking in the mirror!)...I especially loved the ongoing tales of Vera's own dear dogs as Vera gives us a picture rather like the cobbler's children, letting us know that her dogs are real dogs, too, who get into mischief and chew things, etc. Being a traveler, and having traveled in Germany, I loved the stories of traveling with a dog in Europe. How civilized! But best of all, I loved the down to earth humor throughout the book, and letting me see myself and my dog through the eyes of a trainer. I read the book on a long plane trip and laughed until I cried, and told those near me who thought I was nuts what a great book it was. Don't get me wrong, Vera's terse German sense of humor often makes her seem like a tough cookie, but she is a really good trainer as one can see from the miracles she shares in the book! I could hardly wait to return from my trip to see if my spoiled dog can learn a few new things (and unlearn some others)! Thanks, Vera for a great book.....
Dog Training meets reality

Vera has written the book that should have been written 30 years ago - except no one really had the information then. While this book describes how everydog's problems can be tackled, it also addresses the issues with owners that keep them from having their dream dog. I have trained my own pet dogs for 20 years, and I both enjoyed and learned from this book.Ms. Reeves keeps the reader entertained while informing him or her. Bravo!
