I recently picked up this aging gem for the long car ride home, and was pleasantly surprised. Aimed at a general audience, but surprisingly scholarly in its approach. Copiously illustrated, this book is quite delightful. Despite being 25+ years since its printing, its still reasonably fresh, and would serve as a readable introduction to the topic.
