The poems in Banked Fire are rich and brave. They fuse nature's wild "undersound" with portraits of human nature and history. The collection opens with the dreamed syllables of Wallace Stevens stroking the narrator's thigh ("After Love in August") and concludes with "the quiet slip of self-forgiving." ("The Bosqu? at Sunset"). In between are many tender narratives driven by longing, love and (when the river seems too wide) letting go. At the core of the collection, to my ear, is Cowing's earnest and penetrating quest for imaginative clarity. -Anne Valley-Fox, June 19, 2013
