Balzac

By Frederick Lawton

Book Overview

Balzac by Frederick Lawton is a comprehensive biography of the French novelist and playwright Honor de Balzac. The book delves into Balzac's life, from his humble beginnings as the son of a struggling businessman to his rise as one of the most influential writers of the 19th century. Lawton explores Balzac's literary career, including his ambitious project to create a ""Comdie humaine"" a series of interconnected novels that would depict all aspects of French society. The book also covers Balzac's personal life, including his tumultuous relationships with women and his financial struggles. Lawton draws on a wealth of primary sources, including Balzac's letters and journals, to provide a vivid and engaging portrait of this complex and fascinating figure. Balzac is a must-read for anyone interested in French literature, history, or culture. One has little doubt in deciding that, of the two spurs which goaded Balzac's labours, his desire for wealth acted more persistently and energetically than his desire for glory. In his conversations, in his correspondence, money was the eternal theme; in his novels it is almost always the hinge on which the interest, whether of character, plot, or passion, depends. Money was his obsession, day and night; and, in his dormant visions, it must have loomed largely. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
