Houses on sloping ground often have problems with water after every heavy rain. Not only does this water soak into the ground on the uphill side of the house, causing muddy areas, but it also saturates the soil next to the foundation to such an extent that hydrostatic pressure forces moisture in through every opening in the masonry. Normally most foundations are able to withstand tree roots. However, as photos will show, roots can do a lot of damage to the foundation. Either because of drainage problems or the roots may in fact cause the drainage problems. So, the idea is to start digging, explore the ground - while at the same time surf the Internet for modern building renovation methods as well seek up old time craftsman's wisdom.
