TERRIFIC AND COMPELLING

This is a book that is at times disturbing and highly sexual. Its the story about a 21 year guy that murders his parents and then as an assignment by the psychiatrist assigned to determine if he is sane enough to stand trial he keeps a journal of all of his thoughts. In his journal he tells his story beginning with his childhood, as an only son to very wealthy parents who care more about their social status than raising their son. As the journal is in first person we are taken into the world of this New York kid and his descent into drugs, sex and crazy friends. His closest friend is the caretaker's son and he has a real devil-may-care attitude. They kinda grow up together and his friend turned out to be real trouble for the struggling protagonist. For instance, when they break into a house to rob it they're caught and sentenced to the Army. Well, the main character is sent to Vietnam but his buddy stays at home because of his one short leg. I read this book last about 15 years ago and it has stayed with me all these years. Its extremely well written.
