Book Overview

She takes a detour on her walk up the aisle

Minutes before her wedding begins, Kathryn Campbell discovers her fianc is a sleazy fortune-hunter, and she makes a dramatic escape... not only from the ex but from her father, who thinks Kathryn is suffering last-minute jitters and should go on with the ceremony.

He was only changing the oil in his car

When a desperate beauty who's still wearing orange blossoms trips over him and begs for help, gardener's son Jonah Clarke can't say no. But he soon finds this runaway bride doesn't simply want to escape her elaborate wedding and her father's well-protected estate.

His plans for the afternoon didn't include marriage

If she's doomed to marry a fortune-hunter, Kathryn declares, it might as well be one she chooses - so she proposes to Jonah.

He's helped her before - but this time the stakes are higher

With her father in pursuit, the runaways are off on a cross-country trek with a few dollars in cash, a whole lot of baggage - just not the kind that holds clothes - and all the excitement and intimacy of a quirky honeymoon...

And they're not even married... yet.

Backwards Honeymoon by Leigh Michaels (Large Print Harlequin)

Description from the book back cover: There goes the bride! Kathryn Campbell is about to walk up the aisle when she discovers her husband-to-be is a sleazy fortune hunter. Undaunted, Kathryn kicks off her designer wedding dress and makes a dramatic escape - straight into the arms of Jonah Clarke! Jonah is far too much of a gentleman to let a runaway bride do a vanishing act without an escort. And Kathryn soon discovers that being protected by this handsome man with a sexy twinkle in his eye creates all the excitement and intimacy of a honeymoon - except they're not even married ... yet!

Leigh Michaels is in great form!

I enjoyed this book thoroughly and am not in agreement with the two former reviews. I am a fan of Michaels' backlist, especially books like Traveling Man, O'Hara's Legacy, Temporary Measures, Marrying the Boss, Dating Games, The Fake Fiance, and Strictly Business. To me Backwards Honeymoon combined the charm of Ties that Blind (another snob-with-layman book) with the faster pace of her more recent books. Michaels has learned since her original Harlequin Presents how to make her characters extraordinarily likeable - intelligent, humorous, and willing to stand by their opinions, without being moralistic or righteous. As always there's an element of surprise at the end. The one thing I didn't think flew was the occasional switch to the hero's pointof view. This is something Michaels has been experimenting with in the last few years, and it detracts from one of her main strengths - her ability to make the hero seem incomprehensible and mysterious to the heroine. The times she switched to hero-POV, we learn nothing new, and in fact the reality is always a little disappointing - I've always enjoyed letting my imagination fill in the blanks about her heroes' perspectives with the hints she leaves. Overall, though, for me this only distinguished an excellent book from some of her truly marvelous ones. I had a great time reading the book and if she can continue to write at this level I will be very happy.
