Azariah is a young blind boy living in first-century Jerusalem. He and three other impoverished boys eke out an existence running scams on the streets. When they steal a purse from a wealthy man and sit down in a cave to split the loot, they discover a cache of gold they know must be returned-or risk certain prosecution. As a sudden darkness falls over the land, Azariah and his companions realize that a crowd is descending on their location to bury a body in the area's cave tombs. Azariah hides out in a cave with the bag of gold until the crowds leave. But the cave Azariah slips into is the tomb of a crucified man from Nazareth known for his powers to physically heal the sick and forgive their sins. Trapped for days in the tomb with a corpse wrapped in a linen shroud, Azariah descends into fear and hopelessness until a miraculous event leaves him changed forever-spiritually and physically.
