Book Overview

Aylwin is a novel written by Theodore Watts-Dunton and published in 1899. The story revolves around the life of a young man named Felix Aylwin, who is the son of a famous singer and a gypsy woman. The novel is set in the late 19th century and is divided into three parts. In the first part, we see Felix as a young boy growing up in a small village in Sussex. He is raised by his mother and grandmother, who are both gypsies. Felix is a sensitive and artistic child, and he spends much of his time exploring the countryside and dreaming of a better life.In the second part of the novel, Felix moves to London to pursue his passion for music. He becomes a successful composer and falls in love with a young woman named Honoria Waynflete. However, their relationship is complicated by the fact that Honoria is engaged to another man.The third and final part of the novel takes place several years later. Felix has become a famous composer and is reunited with Honoria, who is now a widow. They rekindle their relationship, but their happiness is short-lived as Felix discovers a shocking secret about his past.Aylwin is a complex and emotional novel that explores themes of love, loss, and identity. It is also a vivid portrayal of life in late Victorian England, with its social hierarchies, cultural norms, and artistic movements. The novel is widely regarded as one of the finest works of Theodore Watts-Dunton, who was a prominent literary figure of his time. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. A big, luscious read

This is a big, luscious read of a soapie and, if you're in the mood for just such a read, this fills the bill perfectly. Claire Drummond, a magnificently beautiful, aristocratic Scottish daughter of an old, wealthy and respected family, begins to work for an American multi billionaire as a social secretary, in London, to introduce him to all the "right" people and to increase his business connections in Europe. Claire is in the process of recovering from a disastrous marriage to Lord Rory Ballater, a scoundrel and a rake who is well known for his profligate ways, even among the upper classes . Rory proved to be a drug ridden near-madman who subjected his innocent young wife to beatings and sexual depravities and who delighted in her humiliation. When Claire threatened to disclose his drug smuggling activities to the authorities, Rory methodically drugged her and planned to shut her up in a home for the mentally incompetent. Luckily, Claire's mother rescued her in time and helped her to divorce Rory and to rebuild her life...and this is only the first part of the book !!! The second half is just as thrilling, with Claire and her new boss falling for each other and having to thwart the evil plans of Rory, once again. The story is filled with descriptions of superb clothes, jewels, houses and places and is a great big super soapie..wonderful for a big read when the mood for lavish living comes upon you.
