Laurel grabbed her stomach as a wave of pain ripped through her; what's happening, she thought; it can't be my baby; it's too soon; gripping the wall, trying to steady herself; all she could think of was getting to Jarot; he will know what to do. "I can't have this baby now," Laurel prayed to the Goddess for strength before the next wave of labor pain hit, which was so intense that she found herself on her knees, screaming.

The birthing seemed to take hours, yet the midwives became fearful when the results of the birth produced not just one baby but twins, a boy, and a girl.

Cam, the head midwife, knew she had to act fast before the authorities found out about the birth. Cam then turned to end the babies' lives when Laurel spoke.
