So Lovely

Ah, this book is just great! Awakening Alex is somewhat unusual for a Silhouette Sensation novel because the suspence and action completely take a back seat to the romance for the majority of the story. And, in my opinion, it really works. Alexandra (Alex) Sullivan happily runs the Snug Harbour Lodge. It provides everything she wants - companionship with the guests during the summer, and almost total solitude during the winter. It is during the off-peak season that Grant Malone arrives to stay at the lodge as the only guest. He is clearly uptight and jumpy and Alex tactfully gives him the space he is so obviously in need of. But as the weeks pass, Alex and Grant find themselves drawn to each other and a special bond develops. Both Alex and Grant are really likeable characters. Alex is kind and caring, but she knows when to back off. I admired the way she respected Grant's privacy when he first arrived. In other books, the heroine would have been constantly butting in and trying to draw Grant out of his shell, but Alex never did that. Grant is a great hero - a physical and take-charge type who has been through a terrible experience at work (he's a NY cop) that has badly shaken him. Although Grant could be described as somewhat of a 'tortured hero', the author doesn't go down the stereotypical route of having him be rude and cruel to everyone around him. He's a good guy at heart, who just happens to be going through some emotional turmoil. Another nice thing about the book is that Alex and Grant's relationship develops slowly. You really feel that they care for and respect each other. There are no silly misunderstandings or nastiness - something I appreciate in a romance novel. Alex and Grant talk to each other and share meals and have common interests beyond physical attraction. The ending leaves you in no doubt that they will live happily ever after!

A very promising start

New York City police captain, Grant Malone finds himself in need of a refuge in order to heal his troubled spirit. At the behest of his grandfather, he arrives at the Snug Harbor Lodge for a stay of indeterminate length. Pursued by nightmares, he's not fully convinced that time will heal him but what time can't do, Alexandra Sullivan will. During the off-season, Alex enjoys the isolation of the lodge but she's willing to tolerate the disturbance initially for her grandfather's sake. But there is something about Grant that draws out Alex's intrinsic need to heal. The question is whether or not she is ready for the toll it takes on her heart."Awakening Alex" begins Ruth Langan's new Sullivan Sisters trilogy quite successfully. The Snug Harbor Lodge provides the perfect backdrop for these two characters to get to know one another. Langan does a beautiful job of painting a picture of the Lodge's landscape. She also does a great job of developing the relationship between Grant and Alex as well. Grant truly begins the story as a tortured hero but he finds a great deal of comfort in Alex's company as well as her friendship. Perhaps the one flaw with this story is the rather sudden and unexpected turn in plot, which finds its roots in Grant's pain but seems out of place due to a lack of continuity. All the same, this is a terrific beginning and I'm looking forward to reading more of the Sullivan Sisters.
