The Turks and Caicos Islands belong geographically, but not politically, together with the Bahama Islands to the so-called Lucayan archipelago north of the island of Hispaniola. Although they are located in the Atlantic ocean, they are counted in the Caribbean. The highest elevation reaches only a modest 48 m asl. The climate is tropical and the islands are frequently hit by hurricanes. Due to the biodiversity of marine animals, there are plans to make the islands a World Heritage Site. There are some breeding colonies of seabirds here, but the presence of the West Indian Whistling Duck, which is otherwise quite rare, is notable.
