The Virgin Islands are located between Puerto Rico and Anguilla in the Caribbean, the American part is in the middle area between the British part and the so-called Spanish part, which actually belongs to Puerto Rico. The main islands are St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas. Because of the volcanic nature of the islands, the landscape is mountainous, with the highest point being Crown Mountain at 474 m asl. The climate is subtropical and hurricanes occur regularly. There is a national park designed to protect St. John and the island of Hassel from total commercialization. The original vegetation has been almost completely cut down on the larger islands in recent centuries. Nevertheless, an interesting bird life has been preserved on the approx. 30 smaller islands. Today, tourism is the most important source of income. This multilingual (en, de, fr, es, ja, cn) bird guide introduces the entire bird life of the American Virgin Islands in colored pictures. As a bonus, links to HD videos of more than 25 bird species are included. Where available, links to the valuable websites of UNESCO, BirdLife International and the Ramsar Organization are provided, which characterize the country and help to find the best sites for birdwatching.
