Autochthonous

Books hold the contents of our minds in tangible form. Our history is revealed in the pages of what we read, or is distorted to make us believe we are insignificant. As children our first adventure with a book causes us to look at who we are and challenges us to dig a bit deeper into what it is we wish to become. In shaping the way children view themselves, I felt it my duty to share not a story but the truth in the form of a poem, that the world would have us deny. That we, that call ourselves Black are the original. This book is a love letter to the young people in my life that deserve to see that the history that was has not always been tarnished with pain and injustice. That they are a beautiful fragment of everything that was in the beginning of who we are now, and that they themselves are history in the making. No being existed before us, and every life that came into breathing is a piece of us. Poetically through these pages you will witness words and illustrations that are created by myself and family respectively, never to offend always to uplift, in a way that is true to our culture and for future generations to share and cherish.
