Book Overview

This book is a detailed and comprehensive study of attitudes toward biblical authority and interpretation held from the beginnings of the Christian era to the present day. In clear and readable fashion, the authors examine the writings of early church fathers, the medieval exegetes, and the leaders of the Protestant Reformation to locate the source of, and refute, the position of inerrancy.

Best Book on the History of Exegesis

It is entirely too bad that Rogers' and McKim's book is out of print. While they do have a point of view they present a coherent picture of the trends in both the theology of the Authority of Scripture and methods of interpretation. While many have written about the Reformation era and the 19th and 20th Centuries few have analyzed the Early Church Fathers and even less have covered the whole history. This book should be required reading for every seminary student.
