Authoritarian Cultism

By Zoe Roberts

How does a political movement become a cult?

Authoritarianism rarely begins with open obedience. It begins with grievance. People are taught that they have been betrayed, humiliated, displaced, and robbed of the country they deserve. Grievance becomes identity. Identity becomes belonging. Belonging becomes loyalty. And loyalty eventually demands the defense of a leader, a movement, and a version of reality that can no longer tolerate contradiction.

In Authoritarian Cultism, Zo Roberts examines how democratic political movements are transformed into systems of personal devotion, moral exemption, and collective obedience. Tracing the psychological, social, institutional, and political forces that reshape ordinary citizens into defenders of authoritarian power, Roberts explains why evidence loses its authority, why cruelty becomes acceptable, why betrayal strengthens commitment, and why followers may protect the movement even when it harms them.

This is not a story about ignorance alone. It is a study of belonging, fear, status, identity, propaganda, and power. It reveals how authoritarian leaders convert insecurity into loyalty, how communities enforce obedience from within, and how democratic institutions become vulnerable when political identity replaces independent judgment.

Authoritarian Cultism offers a disturbing but necessary answer to one of the defining questions of our time:

How did so many people become willing to defend what they once would have condemned?
