Book Overview

In 1848, with the waning glory days of the sugar plantations of the Danish West Indies, tensions are mounting. The government is losing touch with the Cruzan plantation aristocracy, and both underestimate the enormous slave population. The King has decreed all newborn negro babies will be born free and promised to free all slaves in twelve years. Plantation owners fear for their future, certain of economic ruin. But a much more imminent threat looms with the beating of tribal drums and suspicious behavior of slaves and free blacks alike. As the three worlds are about to collide on the tropical paradise of St. Croix, Seraphine Petersen finds it increasingly difficult to straddle the racial divide. Should she side with the family of her slave mother, or her Danish father, or the handsome Scottish planter who has captured her heart? When a secret from her past explodes into her already chaotic world, there is no telling what the outcome will be as it appears she may abandon them all.

Great Book! Definite page-turner!

Great book! Once you start, you can't help but keep reading! Liz Carson Rosas creates such vivid characters and describes the island of St. Croix in such a way that I feel as though I experienced it myself. A great historical fiction novel as well as a great story overall. Can't wait to read the sequel, My Name is Freedom!

So Excited to Read this Book!

I have only just received this book but am so excited to start reading it! It is beautiful to look at, and the the back cover and Prologue are so intriguing. I am saving it for a trip I am taking in a few days, I hope I can wait! Wish me luck!

History comes alive in August Freedom by Liz Carson Rosas !

If more historical novels were written this well, every book lover and student would tell you history is their favorite subject. August Freedom kidnaps your mind and weaves you into the lives of the people on the tropical island of St. Croix in the 1800s. Liz Carson Rosas captures their culture in vivid details. The characters and scenes remind me of people and places I knew when I lived in St. Croix in my youth. Smell the frangipani. Feel the tradewinds. You won't be able to put this book down. I'm looking forward to more novels by this new and talented author.

August Freedom by Liz Carson Rosas

Historical fiction at its best from a vantage point I was unaware of. A clasic story of mans' fight for freedom and validation dressed in personable characters that you want to share a meal and a chat with, even Augustus.Cant wait for Liz's next story. This lady has real talent.

Fascinating story!

I got the book 2 days ago and I literally can't put it down. It's an INCREDIBLE story. It's about a time and place in history I knew very little about and now I feel like I'm there and living through it. It's an exhilarating story about freedom! Beautifully written and engrossing. It's rich with everything you want in a story. Amazing realism, fantastically well researched & great writing, and the characters really get under your skin. You REALLY want to know what happens to them. Graceful, stylish writing that just flows. I am enjoying it so much. (No I haven't finished it yet, 3/4 of the way through; "life" gets most inconveniently in the way. I am snarling at my family like a junkyard dog when they interrupt me :) ) I love this book!!
