This is a fairly detailed biography, full of good information for young history students. Ingram gives introductory background on the history of the Hunnish migrations leading up to the reign of Attila, and then follows up with Attila's campaigns. The narrative is clear, although some terms and concepts will be difficult for younger children. I don't recommend trying to read it aloud to children under seven, but those in the target audience (9-12) shouldn't have any trouble with it. Ingram uses quotes from primary sources where appropriate, and includes several sidebars to give additional information on certain topics, such as the composite bows used by the Huns and their remarkable horesemanship. He manages to convey Attila's brutality without unnecessary gore. The book is well-illustrated with grayscale photographs and drawings of battle scenes. Like the text, the illustrations of the battle scenes find a balance between showing the horrors of war without being gory. Two maps show the greatest extent of the Roman Empire (116 AD) and the paths of the Hun invasions (450 AD). A chronology, glossary, source notes, bibliography, website listing and index are included at the end.
