Attica Through The Eyes Of A Woman

Attica Correctional Facility was the site of a prison uprising in September 1971, located in the Town of Attica, New York, operated by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. The riot was that of inmates seeking to improve their living conditions and treatment. The incarcerated individuals took control of a portion of the prison, taking staff members hostage. The men demanded better living conditions, and an end to racial discrimination, and amnesty form prosecution for their actions. The negotiations and retaking lasted several days resulting in a violent confrontation. There were 43 deaths and many injuries. The uprising led to some reforms in prison policies and conditions. Some of the demands by the incarcerated individuals remain unresolved. As a civilian cook at Attica Correctional Facility between the years of 2015 and 2017, I witnessed how some of the white guards treated the large percentage of black prisoners. I saw for my own eyes the way some guards treat other guards and civilians when they treat black prisoners with respect. This is my story about how Attica forces people out if they don't comply with the ways of Attica. "This is Attica, we run this place not, Albany." Until they got one of their own in Albany. The corruption behind the walls of Attica is real and they will go to any extent to protect their way of life.
