A Lasting Tribute to All Unsung Heroes of the 9th Air Force

Mr.Conte has graciously provided aviation historians and serious readers alike a vast important body of information about a little known segment of the Army Air Corps that shouldered the burden of tactical air operations against a highly trained and dangerous opponent. After careful reading I came away with a much broader understanding of the sacrifice of which men like he and my dad (also a member of the 416th BG, 670th BS)gave to insure final victory against Hitler's Germany. From the pre-flight briefings to the low-level bomb runs over enemy targets, through flak infested skies and German fighters, detailed descriptions of life in England and France during WWII and the tragedy & loss of comrades under fire, this book must grace the shelf of any American who does not take war lightly. And did I forget to mention the Douglas A-26 Invader & A-20 Havoc light attack bombers? All former unit members living and dead, including their families, owe a great debt of gratitude to Ralph for his foresight in making this long overdue book a reality. Thanks Ralph! "Havocs, will travel!"

ATTACK BOMBERS WE NEED YOU

A fantastic insight into one of the lesser known bomb groups in the USAAF during WWII, many books have been written about the various bomb groups especially the Eighth Air Force ones and a lot by so called experts so this book comes as a real treat having been written by someone who was really there, The early history of the 416th thro to the final missions is a very fine document of how it really was and dispels some of the myths that the "yanks" had it all there own way. I thought the anecdotes were absolutely amazing Congratulations Mr Conte a military masterpiece.

My Review on Attack Bombers we need you

I thought the book was great! It taught me a lot about my grandpa, Wayne Downing, who is in the 416th bomb group and is my hero. I think kids my age should know more about the importance of World War 2. I think that the more we know about the wars in the past will help us prevent them in the future. -Sara Downing age 12

My Review on Attack Bombers We Need You!

Attack Bombers -- A Much Needed WWII 9th AF Book

As a member of the 416th Bomb Group for its entire existence, this book is a wonderful narration of a little publicized group of A-20 and A-26 aircraft and the men who maintained and flew them during the pre and post invasion times in Europe. There has been so much written about the heavy bombers and even the B-26 Marauder groups, it's time for the A-20s and A-26s to take the spotlight! The book never drags, but takes the reader thru all 285 missions, describing the targets and results, even those few that failed. The description of the planes and flying crew who were shot down in combat really brought back the horrors of war and memories of real heroes. As one who is interested in the ground war in Europe, too, I was able to match up the 416th missions with accounts of day to day combat diaries of some infantry divisions who fought from June 6, 1944 thru May 8th, 1945.All in all, Attack Bombers is an accurate history of what one representative 9th Air Force Group contributed to the victory in Europe. There are enough human interest stories throughout to make it even more readable. It is a must for all members of the Ninth Air Force, at the minimum, and for all readers who love World War II history.
