Atta Troll is a satirical epic poem written by the German poet Heinrich Heine and published in 1843. The poem tells the story of Atta Troll, a bear who becomes a poet and falls in love with a beautiful swan. Along the way, Atta Troll encounters various characters and situations that satirize German politics, society, and culture. The poem is divided into ten cantos, each of which tells a different part of Atta Troll's story. In the first canto, Atta Troll is introduced as a fierce and powerful bear who has grown tired of his violent ways and decides to become a poet. In the second canto, he meets a group of animals who have formed a literary society and join them on their journey to a literary festival. As the story progresses, Atta Troll falls in love with a swan named Cygne and the two embark on a romantic journey together. However, their love is threatened by the prejudices and biases of the other animals, who do not believe that a bear and a swan can be together.Throughout the poem, Heine uses Atta Troll's story as a vehicle for his own social and political commentary. He satirizes German nationalism, the aristocracy, and the bourgeoisie, and criticizes the oppressive nature of German society. At the same time, he celebrates the power of love and the transformative power of art.Overall, Atta Troll is a complex and multi-layered work of literature that combines satire, romance, and social commentary. It remains a significant work of German literature and a testament to Heine's unique voice and vision. With Sketches By Willy Pogany. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. This book is an excellent reading to gain a better understanding of the personal and societal struggles of persons of jewish decent in the turbulent times of the 19th century. While the book does deal with this in a broad and general sense it also allows the reader to feel what the narrator is feeling. It is very entertaining with its humerous irony and exciting plot line and the beauty of its poetic language. Written in the first person, this narrator's trials and tribulations seem so real, so poetic and allow us to rejoice in his advances and feel the sorrow of his struggles. It truly is a significant work, one of the masterpieces of poetry that tell a fascinating tale of a man coming to terms with essentially himself and his place in society. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone.
