James McGinn is a medical student at Trinity College where he indulges in all the privilege and prestige afforded him by his father, a powerful cabinet minister in Sir John A. MacDonald's government. However, the academic challenges of medical school threaten a lifestyle that James is not willing to give up. In a desperate attempt tp restore his failing grades, he steals the answer key to examinations from his professor's cottage and burns the evidence. He is soon implicated in murder. To avoid consequences, James joins the second wave of the Northwest Mounted Police on a perilous march across the vast new Canadian dominion to its most northerly outpost, the Edmonton fortress. James faces the hardships and perils of a violent new land, deadly dissent among his own ranks, and the tenderness of a Metis woman whose life is as foreign to him as the raw frontier itself. Increasingly, however, James cannot escape his own haunted past.
