Atom TV Mini Series 2007-2008

Sometimes just “Atom” (2008) 3 episodes S1 E1 The Clash of the Titans Thu, Jul 26, 2007 S1 E2 The Key to the Cosmos Mon, Jan 28, 2008 S1 E3 The Illusion of Reality Mon, Feb 4, 2008 The presenter is Jim Al-Khalili; he always makes the subject interesting. This is BBC, and there is a Complete DVD Series. This may be a tad dated, but I learned my atom stuff in the 1960s. We get to sort out all those names that may be household to some and exotic to others, such as Einstein, Bohr, Curie, and Rutherford. We get to see top-level formulas that are now recognizable wherever we go. Our picture of the atom changes several times in the series just before it turns into math. And we become uncertain. In the process of presenting, we get to see the Mount Wilson Observatory outside Los Angeles. Weird, while I was in a field in 1967, enjoying a can of ham and lima beans C-rations, someone on the other side of the world discovered quarks. Makes you feel like a slacker. Next up should be: “Everything and Nothing” (2011), Jim Al-Khalili, presenter. More recent: 1001 Inventions and Journeys from Alchemy to Chemistry (2019)
