This Atlas consists of two parts.
The first part is a collection of images which covers 369 species of hard wood (185 genera, 95 families). Each species includes six real color images, including one photograph of the wood specimen, and five microscopic images of that same specimen. For easy observation of the macro characteristics of these microscopic images, we chose a 13-time transverse surface image; A 30-time transverse, to observe and take note of the quantitative characteristics of the specimen; and three 90-time transverse, radial, and tangential surface images to show those microscopic characteristics more clearly.
More than 80% microscopic features (163) on IAWA list can be clearly observed in this atlas (1845 micro-photographs). Wood species are arranged in alphabetical order, to make the comparison within the genus easier. Two-page layout design (each opposite page shown three species on three lines). Each line included six images: specimen, transverse 13x, 30x, 90x, radial 90x, tangential 90x. This arrangement is convenient for side-by-side comparison of similar species.
The second part of this book, is a text with additional information on the same 369 wood species. This includes basic information such as scientific, synonyms and common names, their geographic distribution, specific gravity, tree size, color, odor, grain/texture, sustainability, and descriptions of the macro-micro characteristics and identification keys.
