Everybody in the room got to talk.
Nobody was silenced. The process was followed. And the outcome was decided before anyone opened his mouth.
Most of what we call conversation is a monologue with intermissions. We answer before we understand. We argue with a version of what he said that is easier to beat. We hold a word like love or respect and never once ask what the other person means by it. And when it goes badly, we replay it - and in the replay, we rewrite only our own lines.
A neighborhood church offers a class on communication. Four people sign up, and every one of them comes for the same reason: they want a tool for handling somebody else. Warren answers questions nobody asked. Victor wins arguments and loses people. Gina takes the wheel out of everyone's hands and calls it help. Nev keeps the peace, and his family pays for it.
None of them expects to be the subject.
Over twenty Tuesdays a pastor and a guest instructor take them through what Scripture says about the mouth - swift to hear, slow to speak; not many of you should become teachers; out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. They study how Jesus actually spoke to the person in front of Him, reading the man before answering him, starting with what was already in his hands, asking more than He told. And they learn the harder half of it: that most of what crosses between two people is not the words at all, and that the hearer is carrying a life you know nothing about.
This is not a book of techniques. James says plainly that no man tames the tongue - and a proud man with better questions is simply a more effective proud man. The mouth is a gauge. You do not repair a gauge.
But God has a purpose for our words, and it is a good one. Words build. He made the world with them. And He tells us what ours are for: that they may impart grace to the hearers.
You already know the conversation you have been avoiding. You have known since the second chapter.
