The signs are unmistakable: The girl Luklak is transforming into a crocodile. More precisely, into an Aswang, a mythical creature of the Philippines. Fascinated, Luklak discovers the power of her new body, but her father is distraught.

Searching for a cure, he travels through the village, where the inhabitants fear an impending pirate attack. Luklak's father wants to seek help from the wise men, but when a Spanish priest, a monkey in red trousers, and a flock of spirit birds get involved, the undertaking spirals out of control.

In a rousing novel, Allan Derain tells of spirits, myths and legends, of zealous priests and colonial rulers, of father and daughter and the amazing journey of a courageous girl.
